Enjoying the river

Wolfpaw walked down to the river his eyes on the water and he smiled he loved the river especially when the sun was setting, because the way the sun hit the water was beautiful. 'To bad it's sun high, but I'll come back later to see the sunset reflected on the water,' he thought smiling as he slid into the water his eyes flicking back in forth and his grew as he began to swim around enjoying th feel of the water lapping over his back.

Still smiling he glanced down and saw some fish swimming around even though he hadn't come out here to hunt he decided to hunt any way. Taking a deep breath he dove under water and grasped a fish between his teeth before resurfacing. Purring with delite he killed the fish and placed it on the shore making sure that it was far enough away to keep it from sliding back in. Taking neither deep brother he dove back under water this time taking his time. When he resurfaced again he had to the tails of three fish clenched between his teeth. He felt pride sweep through him and placed his three fish by his other fish and gazed at the sky.

The sky appeared to be clear with not a cloud in sight and he realized that, that meant it wouldn't rain anytime soon. There had been a storm the other day, but it hadn't done them much good. It was still really hot and a dip in the river did cool you off, but once you were out the river it didn't last long, you were back to being hot. Deciding to take a break from fishing he decided to swim around for a bit. He swam deeper until his paws didn't touch the bottom anymore and swam around enjoying the coolness that the water brought him. Even though he was a riverclan cat he had long fur, and he was pleased about that, because it meant he could stay cooler longer then his clan mates, because his longer fur didn't dry as fast as the fur of his clan mates. Purring slightly he dove into the water and resurfaced a few minutes later water dripping into his eyes. He gazed over to thunderclans forest and shuddered. 'How can they stand being under the trees like that, and not swimming?' he asked himself frowning. 'But then again the other clans probably wonder the same thing about us,' he thought and smiled shrugging.

Still thinking about other clans he shook himself and blinked trying to remember what he had been doing. Remembering he returned to swimming every now and then glancing towards the shore where he left his fish. Sighing he rolled his eyes and swam back to the shore picking up all four of his fish by their tails and bounded back to camp dropping the fish on the fresh kill pile before bounding back out of camp and back down to the river. Grinning he slid back into the river swimming deeper and flipped over on his back letting himself float along the river making sure that he didn't accidentally float onto the thunderclan side.

Blackclaw looked up, then slid gracefully into the cool water. Her dark coat becoming sleek with the water, and turning black. She allowed herself to relax a moment, enjoying the feel of the river's water rushing around her. Then feeling movement beneath her paws, she quickly dove, coming up with a small fish in her mouth. She swam to shore, and placed the fish on the ground where she swiftly killed it. Just then she heard water slash softly. She looked up to see a cat's head surface in the water, tightly clutching the tails of three fish. As she watched she saw that he had caught another one before. She purred, realizing that the was was Wolfpaw. The clan needed good hunters and fishers. She started to speak, then thought better of it. He was alone for a reason, and would probably just think she was a noisy warrior if she called out to him. Then when he bounded off with his catch, she just watched, then turned and returned into the cool embrace of the river. She dove under, looking around, but came up for air before she was able to catch anything. She dove again, then she swam down, enjoying watching the life under the water. How can any cat not want to see this? the wondered, shivering from the thought of living outside of the water all the time. When she resurfaced, she realized that Wolfpaw had returned. Great catch! she called out, wanting to let the apprentice know that the clan was proud of him, and that he had a special skill at fishing.

Wolfpaw flipped back over so that his paws were under him, and turned toward the voice. "Ah thank you Blackclaw," Wolfpaw meowed realizing who it was instantly. "Are you here to fish or just to cool off?" he asked her swimming over giving her a small smile. "You know what I don't see is how thunderclan can stand living under the trees," he meowed glancing towards the thunderclan forest.

Blackclaw swam toward Wolfpaw, then started to tread water. Both, actually, and yourself? she asked kindly. Then she nodded at his next statement. I know! I can't stand to think of how awful it must be! she said, shivering again slightly. The thought was... well unnatural for a Riverclan cat to think of living like the other clan cats do. They were born for the water, and were one with the water from the time when they were first old enough to know how to swim. She looked up, hoping for some rain clouds, but only seeing the bright yellow ball of heat. The sun beat down without mercy on the cool river, threatening to dry it up if rain didn't come soon. Though she knew the river never fully dried up, it did shrink, and the fish moved to deeper waters outside of the clan's land at times. She prayed to Starclan that rain would come long before that happened.

"I do know it stormed the other day, but I think it only got hotter," Wolfpaw meowed also gazing at the sky. 'I hope it rains soon, soon even the river won't cool us from the heat,' he thought. "Its not only that I dislike thunderclans forest, but that they seem so full of themselves," he meowed blinking. "Sometimes I like to come to the river and watch the sunset reflect off the river," he meowed wishing that the sun could set now. Smiling he waded around looking at the sky. 'If it doesn't rain soon we'll be forced to catch birds,' he thought curling his lip in disgust at the thought of having to eat birds before leafbare. 'I just hope that when or if it does rain, it doesn't rain so hard that it floods our tettitory,' he thought shuddering at the thought.

Blackclaw looked over at the trees on Thunderclan's side. I know, they have all that land and prey, while we rely on the river. she said, her voice giving away her disgust. It's beautiful, I remember the first time I saw the sun set over the waters. she said as his next comment brought her back to her apprenticeship. She then looked at the sky again. This time it was different. Although their was still no rain to be had, some small, wispy clouds floated across the sun, reflecting some of its heat away from them. With the clouds came a gentle, soothing breeze. I wish it would rain too. Look, there are some clouds. Oh! and that breeze! she said, excited and relived to feel the cool air against her wet fur. Thinking about a rain caused her mind flash back to the last time the river flooded, forcing them to move the whole camp. Many had become sick from the water and the move, but over time the water moved on and they were able to return to camp and gather herbs for the sick.

The last time the river had flooding he had only been a kit and it had been terrifying for a while after the flood he had been afraid of the water, but now he didn't even know why he was afraid of the water. "Maybe it'll rain over night, but it might leak in the apprentice den," Wolfpaw meowed flicking his tail.

Blackclaw looked around, then dove under the water again, hoping to catch the fist that had just bitten her tail. She just missed, and came up gasping. Hissing under her breath when she had broken the surface she turned to face Wolfpaw again. We could go and patch it up if you want. That will keep most of the water out. she offered. She looked up and saw that the clouds were moving faster. Rain was diffidently near, but she had no way to know if it would fall here, or miss them.
